Possible
About 20% of wildlife watchers report a Pied Skimmer sighting in Shanghai on a given day, based on 78 verified sightings from GBIF citizen-science data. It is the 14th most-seen of the 215 insects we can rate there. Over three days the chance rises to about 40%, and over a week to about 70%, if each day is a fresh chance.
June and July
In those months about 30% of wildlife watchers report a Pied Skimmer in Shanghai on a given day, against under 5% in March–April and October–January, the lowest months. Those are among Shanghai's wettest months, with about 170 mm of rain a month against 55 mm in December.
Between 8 and 11 am
Across all the parks we cover, that three-hour window holds the most Pied Skimmer sightings with a recorded time, and nearly all of them come between 6 am and 6 pm: it is a daytime animal.
Among the best
Of the 22 cities where we can rate Pied Skimmer sightings, Shanghai ranks 8th at about 20%, level with the leaders once rounded. The best odds are in Ningbo (China, about 20%), Daegu (South Korea, about 20%) and Jinan (China, about 20%).
Same family: Libellulidae
The closest relatives of the Pied Skimmer that you can see in Shanghai (family Libellulidae, Skimmers) are Slender Skimmer (about 20%), Ditch Jewel (about 20%) and Scarlet Skimmer (about 10%), with each one's daily chance of a sighting.
GBIF citizen-science records
It is estimated from how often the Pied Skimmer is recorded against all the insects logged in Shanghai (78 verified sightings), calibrated against known sighting rates. Figures are rounded to the nearest 10% because citizen-science data supports honest approximations, not decimals, and months with records from fewer than five people show "—". How it works.
