Stenodema pilosa

Stenodema pilosa is a species of plant bug in the family Miridae, first described in 1889. It can be found across transcontinental North America Eurasia.[1] Species within the genus Stenodema are elongate with a longitudinal furrow between the eyes and are best distinguished by the coarsely and densely pitted prothorax. S. pilosa is about 8–9 mm long and has three spurs on the hind femora. This distinguishes it from other closely related species, notably S. calcarata which has two femoral spurs.
There are two generations per year. Adults which have overwintered and mated in the spring are green with an orange-brown hourglass marking down their back, and those born later in the year are beige or tan. Males are often darker than females.[2]
This species has been found across transcontinental North America Eurasia and is commonly observed in grassy fields and wetlands. Stenodema pilosa feeds on grasses such as the meadow foxtail, reed canary grass and common reed. They overwinter as adults and emerge in April, and the new generation is complete by August.

Rare
Under 5% of wildlife watchers report a Three-Spined Grass Bug sighting in Montreal on a given day, based on 12 verified sightings from GBIF citizen-science data. It is the 502nd most-seen of the 926 insects we can rate there. Over three days the chance rises to about 10%, and over a week to about 20%, if each day is a fresh chance.
Any time of year
In every month with enough records, under 5% of wildlife watchers report a Three-Spined Grass Bug in Montreal on a given day, so our monthly data shows no clear season.
3rd of 8
Of the 8 cities where we can rate Three-Spined Grass Bug sightings, Montreal ranks 3rd at under 5%. The best odds are in Helsinki (Finland, about 10%) and Baltimore (United States, under 5%).
Same family: Miridae
The closest relatives of the Three-Spined Grass Bug that you can see in Montreal (family Miridae, Plant Bugs) are North American Tarnished Plant Bug (about 10%) and Alfalfa Plant Bug (about 10%), with each one's daily chance of a sighting.
GBIF citizen-science records
It is estimated from how often the Three-Spined Grass Bug is recorded against all the insects logged in Montreal (12 verified sightings), calibrated against known sighting rates. Figures are rounded to the nearest 10% because citizen-science data supports honest approximations, not decimals, and months with records from fewer than five people show "—". How it works.
