About the Marumba sperchius

Marumba sperchius is a species of moth of the family Sphingidae first described by Édouard Ménétries in 1857. It is found from north-western and north-eastern India, south-western, central and eastern China to the southern Russian Far East, North Korea, South Korea and Japan. It is also present on Sumatra and Borneo.

The wingspan is 88–138 mm. It is similar to Marumba juvencus, but the lines of the forewing and the ground colour of the hindwing are more reddish and the lines on either side of the weak discal spot are hardly converge.

There are two generations per year with adults on wing in April and again in August in northern China. In Korea, adults are on wing from late May to late August. The larvae have been recorded feeding on Castanea (including C. crenata), Castanopsis, Quercus (including Q. glauca, Q. mongolica, Q. acutissima, Q. myrsinaefolia, Q. acuta, Q. salicina and Q. serrata), Juglans (including J. regia and J. mandschurica), Lithocarpus (including L. edulis) and Eriobotrya species. Early instars are pale yellow, while later instars turn bluish green with the tubercles brown or reddish, tipped with white. Oblique stripes... Wikipedia →

Under 5% of wildlife watchers report a Marumba sperchius sighting in Tokyo on a given day, based on 29 verified sightings from GBIF citizen-science data. It is the 357th most-seen of the 1013 insects we can rate there. Over three days the chance rises to about 10%, and over a week to about 20%, if each day is a fresh chance.

When is the best time to see a Marumba sperchius in Tokyo?

June

In that month about 10% of wildlife watchers report a Marumba sperchius in Tokyo on a given day, against under 5% in July to May, the lowest months.

Where else can you see a Marumba sperchius?

Only Tokyo, in our data

Tokyo is the only city on Wallace's Line with enough records to rate Marumba sperchius sightings: under 5% of wildlife watchers there report one on a given day.

Where does the Marumba sperchius sighting chance come from?

GBIF citizen-science records

It is estimated from how often the Marumba sperchius is recorded against all the insects logged in Tokyo (29 verified sightings), calibrated against known sighting rates. Figures are rounded to the nearest 10% because citizen-science data supports honest approximations, not decimals, and months with records from fewer than five people show "—". How it works.
