The Southern African rock python (Python natalensis) is a large python species native to Southern Africa inhabiting savanna and woodland. It was first described by Andrew Smith in 1833. Growing a length of more than 5 m (16 ft), this is one of the largest snakes in the world.
The Southern African rock python has a colouration that is similar to its northern relative, however it is described as being "drabber". Below the light stripe on both snakes' head, the southern species has a narrower dark patch that resembles a stripe instead of a patch. The Central African rock python (Python sebae) has two prominent light lines from the nose, over the eye to the back of the head, which are much duller in the Southern African rock python. The northern species has considerably larger head scales. It is also noticeably inferior in size to size the Central African rock python.
The Southern African rock python reaches an average length of between 2.8 and 4 m (9 ft 2 in and 13 ft 1 in). Individuals longer than 4.6 m (15 ft) are rare. Regarding body length and mass, this species exhibits sexual dimorphism, as females are significantly larger and heavier than males. Of... Wikipedia →

Possible
About 20% of wildlife watchers report a Southern African Python sighting in uMkhuze Game Reserve on a given day, based on 6 verified sightings from GBIF citizen-science data from 2019 to 2026. It is the 14th most-seen of the 18 reptiles we can rate there. Over three days the chance rises to about 50%, and over a week to about 80%, if each day is a fresh chance.
February
In that month about 40% of wildlife watchers report a Southern African Python in uMkhuze Game Reserve on a given day, against under 5% in April, June–August and November–January, the lowest months. That is one of uMkhuze Game Reserve's wettest months, with about 120 mm of rain against 15 mm in July.
Between 9 am and noon
Across all the parks we cover, that three-hour window holds the most Southern African Python sightings with a recorded time, and about 8 in 10 of them come between 6 am and 6 pm: it is a daytime animal.
Among the best
Of the 9 parks where we can rate Southern African Python sightings, uMkhuze Game Reserve ranks 2nd at about 20%, level with the leaders once rounded. The best odds are in Liwonde National Park (Malawi, about 20%).
GBIF citizen-science records
It is estimated from how often the Southern African Python is recorded against all the reptiles logged in uMkhuze Game Reserve (6 verified sightings from 2019 to 2026), calibrated against known sighting rates. Figures are rounded to the nearest 10% because citizen-science data supports honest approximations, not decimals, and months with records from fewer than five people show "—". How it works.
