The golden-fronted whitestart, yellow-fronted whitestart, or golden-fronted redstart (Myioborus ornatus) is a species of bird in the family Parulidae, the New World warblers. It is found in Colombia and Venezuela. The white-fronted whitestart was formally described in 1840 with the binomial Setophaga ornata.
The species' further taxonomy is unsettled. However, in 2016 BirdLife International's Handbook of the Birds of the World (HBW) split them into separate species. Confusingly, HBW calls M. ornatus the "yellow-fronted whitestart" and M. chrysops the "golden-fronted whitestart".
This article follows the majority's one species, two subspecies model. The golden-fronted whitestart is 13 to 13.5 cm (5.1 to 5.3 in) long; the nominate subspecies M. o. ornatus weighs about 11 to 13 g (0.39 to 0.46 oz). The sexes have the same plumage. Adults of the nominate subspecies have a bright yellow forehead and forecrown, a white face, and a blackish rear crown and rear sides of their head with a small white crescent on the ear coverts... Rare
Under 5% of wildlife watchers report a Golden-fronted Redstart sighting in Bogota on a given day, based on 40 verified sightings from GBIF citizen-science data. It is the 148th most-seen of the 231 birds we can rate there. Over three days the chance rises to under 5%, if each day is a fresh chance.
Any time of year
In every month with enough records, under 5% of wildlife watchers report a Golden-fronted Redstart in Bogota on a given day, so our monthly data shows no clear season.
Between 8 and 11 am
Across all the parks we cover, that three-hour window holds the most Golden-fronted Redstart sightings with a recorded time, and about 9 in 10 of them come between 6 am and 6 pm: it is a daytime animal.
Only Bogota, in our data
Bogota is the only city on Wallace's Line with enough records to rate Golden-fronted Redstart sightings: under 5% of wildlife watchers there report one on a given day.
Same family: Parulidae
The closest relatives of the Golden-fronted Redstart that you can see in Bogota (family Parulidae, New World Warblers) are Blackburnian Warbler (about 20%), Yellow Warbler (about 10%) and Tennessee Warbler (about 10%), with each one's daily chance of a sighting.
GBIF citizen-science records
It is estimated from how often the Golden-fronted Redstart is recorded against all the birds logged in Bogota (40 verified sightings), calibrated against known sighting rates. Figures are rounded to the nearest 10% because citizen-science data supports honest approximations, not decimals, and months with records from fewer than five people show "—". How it works.
