The Oriental greenfinch (Chloris sinica), also known as the grey-capped greenfinch, is a small passerine bird in the finch family Fringillidae that breeds in broadleaf and conifer woodlands of the East Palearctic. In 1760 the French zoologist Mathurin Jacques Brisson included a description of the Oriental greenfinch in his Ornithologie based on a specimen collected in China. He used the French name Le pinçon de la Chine and the Latin Fringilla sinencis. Although Brisson coined Latin names, these do not conform to the binomial system and are not recognised by the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature. When in 1766 the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus updated his Systema Naturae for the twelfth edition, he added 240 species that had been previously described by Brisson. One of these was the oriental greenfinch. Linnaeus included a brief description, coined the binomial name Fringilla sinica and cited Brisson's work. The type locality was subsequently restricted to Macau in eastern China. The specific name sinica is Medieval Latin for Chinese.
The greenfinches were later placed in the genus Carduelis but when molecular phylogenetic studies found that they were... Wikipedia →

Rare
Under 5% of wildlife watchers report an Oriental Greenfinch sighting in Taipei on a given day, based on 6 verified sightings from GBIF citizen-science data. It is the 250th most-seen of the 266 birds we can rate there. Over three days the chance rises to under 5%, if each day is a fresh chance.
Any time of year
In every month with enough records, under 5% of wildlife watchers report an Oriental Greenfinch in Taipei on a given day, so our monthly data shows no clear season.
Between 1 and 4 am
Across all the parks we cover, that three-hour window holds the most Oriental Greenfinch sightings with a recorded time, and about 6 in 10 of them come between 6 pm and 6 am: it is most active around dawn and dusk.
46th of 46
Of the 46 cities where we can rate Oriental Greenfinch sightings, Taipei ranks 46th at under 5%. The best odds are in Sendai (Japan, about 70%), Beijing (China, about 60%) and Nagoya (Japan, about 50%).
GBIF citizen-science records
It is estimated from how often the Oriental Greenfinch is recorded against all the birds logged in Taipei (6 verified sightings), calibrated against known sighting rates. Figures are rounded to the nearest 10% because citizen-science data supports honest approximations, not decimals, and months with records from fewer than five people show "—". How it works.
