About the Sitatunga

The sitatunga (Tragelaphus spekii) or marshbuck is a swamp-dwelling medium-sized antelope found throughout central Africa, centering on the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Republic of the Congo, Cameroon, parts of Southern Sudan, Equatorial Guinea, Burundi, Ghana, Botswana, Rwanda, Zambia, Gabon, the Central African Republic, Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya.

The sitatunga is mostly confined to swampy and marshy habitats. They occur in tall and dense vegetation as well as seasonal swamps, marshy clearings in forests, riparian thickets and mangrove swamps. The scientific name of the sitatunga is Tragelaphus spekii. The species was first described by the English explorer John Hanning Speke in 1863. Speke first observed the sitatunga at a lake named "Little Windermere" (now Lake Lwelo, located in Kagera, Tanzania). In his book Journal of the Discovery of the Source of the Nile, Speke called the animal "nzoé" (Kiswahili name for the animal) or "water-boc" (due to its resemblance to the waterbuck). The word "sitatunga" itself comes from an ancient Bantu language. The scientific name has often been misstated as T. spekei, and either Speke or Sclater is referred... Wikipedia →

Before you go

What are the chances of seeing a Sitatunga in Kampala?

Possible

About 20% of wildlife watchers report a Sitatunga sighting in Kampala on a given day, based on 11 verified sightings from GBIF citizen-science data. It is the 7th most-seen of the 7 mammals we can rate there. Over three days the chance rises to about 50%, and over a week to about 80%, if each day is a fresh chance.

When is the best time to see a Sitatunga in Kampala?

April

In that month about 40% of wildlife watchers report a Sitatunga in Kampala on a given day, against under 5% in February–March, May–July and October–November, the lowest months. That is one of Kampala's wettest months, with about 190 mm of rain against 55 mm in July.

What time of day is best to see a Sitatunga?

Between 7 and 10 am

Across all the parks we cover, that three-hour window holds the most Sitatunga sightings with a recorded time, and about 9 in 10 of them come between 6 am and 6 pm: it is a daytime animal.

Where else can you see a Sitatunga?

Only Kampala, in our data

Kampala is the only city on Wallace's Line with enough records to rate Sitatunga sightings: about 20% of wildlife watchers there report one on a given day.

Where does the Sitatunga sighting chance come from?

GBIF citizen-science records

It is estimated from how often the Sitatunga is recorded against all the mammals logged in Kampala (11 verified sightings), calibrated against known sighting rates. Figures are rounded to the nearest 10% because citizen-science data supports honest approximations, not decimals, and months with records from fewer than five people show "—". How it works.
