With luck
About 10% of wildlife watchers report an Orange-Faced Sprite sighting in Kolkata on a given day, based on 29 verified sightings from GBIF citizen-science data. It is the 83rd most-seen of the 213 insects we can rate there. Over three days the chance rises to about 30%, and over a week to about 60%, if each day is a fresh chance.
February to April
In those months about 20% of wildlife watchers report an Orange-Faced Sprite in Kolkata on a given day, against under 5% in June and August–September, the lowest months. Those are among Kolkata's driest months, with about 35 mm of rain a month against 330 mm in July.
Between noon and 3 pm
Across all the parks we cover, that three-hour window holds the most Orange-Faced Sprite sightings with a recorded time, and about 9 in 10 of them come between 6 am and 6 pm: it is a daytime animal.
5th of 12
Of the 12 cities where we can rate Orange-Faced Sprite sightings, Kolkata ranks 5th at about 10%. The best odds are in Yogyakarta (Indonesia, about 20%), Jakarta (Indonesia, about 10%) and Colombo [Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte] (Sri Lanka, about 10%).
GBIF citizen-science records
It is estimated from how often the Orange-Faced Sprite is recorded against all the insects logged in Kolkata (29 verified sightings), calibrated against known sighting rates. Figures are rounded to the nearest 10% because citizen-science data supports honest approximations, not decimals, and months with records from fewer than five people show "—". How it works.
