The paradise jacamar (Galbula dea) is a species of bird in the family Galbulidae. It is found in Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela. The paradise jacamar was formally described in 1758 by the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus in the tenth edition of his Systema Naturae. He placed it with the kingfishers in the genus Alcedo and coined the binomial name Alcedo dea. Linnaeus based his entry on the "swallow-tail'd king-fisher" that had been described and illustrated in 1743 by the English naturalist George Edwards in his multivolume A Natural History of Uncommon Bird. Edwards had examined a specimen that had been collected in the Dutch colony of Surinam. The paradise jacamar is now one of ten species placed in the genus Galbula that was introduced in 1760 by the French zoologist Mathurin Jacques Brisson. The genus name Galbula is from the Latin galuba, a word for a small yellow bird. The specific epithet dea is Latin meaning "goddess".

Rare
Under 5% of wildlife watchers report a Paradise Jacamar sighting in Sierra de la Macarena National Park on a given day, based on 6 verified sightings from GBIF citizen-science data from 2019 to 2026. It is the 380th most-seen of the 418 birds we can rate there. Over three days the chance rises to under 5%, if each day is a fresh chance.
Any time of year
In every month with enough records, under 5% of wildlife watchers report a Paradise Jacamar in Sierra de la Macarena National Park on a given day, so our monthly data shows no clear season.
Between 7 and 10 am
Across all the parks we cover, that three-hour window holds the most Paradise Jacamar sightings with a recorded time, and about 9 in 10 of them come between 6 am and 6 pm: it is a daytime animal.
5th of 5
Of the 5 parks where we can rate Paradise Jacamar sightings, Sierra de la Macarena National Park ranks 5th at under 5%. The best odds are in Anavilhanas National Park (Brazil, about 10%), Tambopata National Reserve (Peru, under 5%) and Amacayacu National Natural Park (Colombia, under 5%).
GBIF citizen-science records
It is estimated from how often the Paradise Jacamar is recorded against all the birds logged in Sierra de la Macarena National Park (6 verified sightings from 2019 to 2026), calibrated against known sighting rates. Figures are rounded to the nearest 10% because citizen-science data supports honest approximations, not decimals, and months with records from fewer than five people show "—". How it works.
