Freiberg's forest toadlet (Engystomops freibergi) is a frog native to the Amazonian Brazil, southeastern Peru, and Amazonian Bolivia. For a while, it was considered to be a synonym of Engystomops petersi, its sibling species, but its species status was resurrected in a study published in 1998. Nevertheless, these two species have also been mixed in later studies, and there are records from the Guianas that have not yet been allocated to either species. Divergence of these two species seems to have been driven by behavioural isolation related to male call characteristics more than geographic isolation.
Engystomops freibergi are relatively small frogs. Males measure 24–36 mm (0.94–1.42 in) in snout–vent length and females 25–39 mm (0.98–1.54 in). Dorsal colouration is variable. Skin on dorsum is warty, bearing small tubercles with scattered larger tubercles.
Engystomops freibergi is a locally common species found in lowland Amazon rainforest. These frogs are nocturnal and usually found in the leaf litter in primary forest. They feed primarily on termites. Scientists have reported the frogs in protected places Tambopata National Reserve, Manu National Park... Wikipedia →

Possible
About 20% of wildlife watchers report a Freiberg's Foam-Frog sighting in Tambopata National Reserve on a given day, based on 18 verified sightings from GBIF citizen-science data from 2019 to 2026. It is the 17th most-seen of the 44 amphibians we can rate there. Over three days the chance rises to about 40%, and over a week to about 70%, if each day is a fresh chance.
July and December
In those months about 30% of wildlife watchers report a Freiberg's Foam-Frog in Tambopata National Reserve on a given day, against under 5% in March, May and November, the lowest months.
Between 8 and 11 pm
Across all the parks we cover, that three-hour window holds the most Freiberg's Foam-Frog sightings with a recorded time, and about 7 in 10 of them come between 6 pm and 6 am: it is mostly seen at night.
2nd of 2
Of the 2 parks where we can rate Freiberg's Foam-Frog sightings, Tambopata National Reserve ranks 2nd at about 20%. The best odds are in Manu National Park (Peru, about 30%).
Same family: Leptodactylidae
The closest relatives of the Freiberg's Foam-Frog that you can see in Tambopata National Reserve (family Leptodactylidae, Southern Frogs) are Sharp-nosed Jungle Frog (about 40%), Madre de Dios Thin-toed Frog (about 20%) and Perez's Snouted Frog (about 20%), with each one's daily chance of a sighting.
GBIF citizen-science records
It is estimated from how often the Freiberg's Foam-Frog is recorded against all the amphibians logged in Tambopata National Reserve (18 verified sightings from 2019 to 2026), calibrated against known sighting rates. Figures are rounded to the nearest 10% because citizen-science data supports honest approximations, not decimals, and months with records from fewer than five people show "—". How it works.
