The paradise jacamar (Galbula dea) is a species of bird in the family Galbulidae. It is found in Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela. The paradise jacamar was formally described in 1758 by the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus in the tenth edition of his Systema Naturae. He placed it with the kingfishers in the genus Alcedo and coined the binomial name Alcedo dea. Linnaeus based his entry on the "swallow-tail'd king-fisher" that had been described and illustrated in 1743 by the English naturalist George Edwards in his multivolume A Natural History of Uncommon Bird. Edwards had examined a specimen that had been collected in the Dutch colony of Surinam. The paradise jacamar is now one of ten species placed in the genus Galbula that was introduced in 1760 by the French zoologist Mathurin Jacques Brisson. The genus name Galbula is from the Latin galuba, a word for a small yellow bird. The specific epithet dea is Latin meaning "goddess".

Rare
Under 5% of wildlife watchers report a Paradise Jacamar sighting in Tambopata National Reserve on a given day, based on 77 verified sightings from GBIF citizen-science data from 2019 to 2026. It is the 342nd most-seen of the 550 birds we can rate there. Over three days the chance rises to about 10%, and over a week to about 20%, if each day is a fresh chance.
February and May
In those months about 10% of wildlife watchers report a Paradise Jacamar in Tambopata National Reserve on a given day, against under 5% in March–April and June–January, the lowest months.
Between 7 and 10 am
Across all the parks we cover, that three-hour window holds the most Paradise Jacamar sightings with a recorded time, and about 9 in 10 of them come between 6 am and 6 pm: it is a daytime animal.
2nd of 5
Of the 5 parks where we can rate Paradise Jacamar sightings, Tambopata National Reserve ranks 2nd at under 5%. The best odds are in Anavilhanas National Park (Brazil, about 10%).
GBIF citizen-science records
It is estimated from how often the Paradise Jacamar is recorded against all the birds logged in Tambopata National Reserve (77 verified sightings from 2019 to 2026), calibrated against known sighting rates. Figures are rounded to the nearest 10% because citizen-science data supports honest approximations, not decimals, and months with records from fewer than five people show "—". How it works.
