About the Jabiru
The jabiru ( or; Jabiru mycteria) is a large stork found in the Americas from Mexico to Argentina, except west of the Andes. It sometimes wanders into the United States, usually in Texas, but has also been reported in Mississippi, Oklahoma and Louisiana. It is most common in the Pantanal region of Brazil and the Eastern Chaco region of Paraguay. It is the only member of the genus Jabiru. The name comes from the Tupi–Guaraní language and means "swollen neck".
Hinrich Lichtenstein described the jabiru in 1819. The name jabiru has also been used for two other birds of a distinct genus: black-necked stork (Ephippiorhynchus asiaticus), commonly called "jabiru" in Australia; and sometimes also for the saddle-billed stork (Ephippiorhynchus senegalensis) of Sub-Saharan Africa. In particular, Gardiner's Egyptian hieroglyph G29, believed to depict an E. senegalensis, is sometimes labeled "jabiru" in hieroglyph lists. The Ephippiorhynchus is believed to be the jabiru's closest living cousin, indicating an Old World origin for the species.
The proposed Late Pleistocene fossil stork genus Prociconia from Brazil might actually belong in Jabiru. A fossil species of jabiru was found... Wikipedia →

What are the chances of seeing a Jabiru in Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve?
Rare
Under 5% of wildlife watchers report a Jabiru sighting in Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve on a given day, based on 25 verified sightings from GBIF citizen-science data from 2019 to 2026. It is the 242nd most-seen of the 288 birds we can rate there. Over three days the chance rises to under 5%, and over a week to about 10%, if each day is a fresh chance.
When is the best time to see a Jabiru in Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve?
Any time of year
In every month with enough records, under 5% of wildlife watchers report a Jabiru in Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve on a given day, so our monthly data shows no clear season.
What time of day is best to see a Jabiru?
Between 3 and 6 pm
Across all the parks we cover, that three-hour window holds the most Jabiru sightings with a recorded time, and about 9 in 10 of them come between 6 am and 6 pm: it is a daytime animal.
Is Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve the best place to see a Jabiru?
6th of 10
Of the 10 parks where we can rate Jabiru sightings, Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve ranks 6th at under 5%. The best odds are in Parque Estadual Encontro das Águas (Brazil, about 70%), Palo Verde National Park (Costa Rica, about 40%) and El Impenetrable National Park (Argentina, about 20%). All parks ranked.
Where does the Jabiru sighting chance come from?
GBIF citizen-science records
It is estimated from how often the Jabiru is recorded against all the birds logged in Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve (25 verified sightings from 2019 to 2026), calibrated against known sighting rates. Figures are rounded to the nearest 10% because citizen-science data supports honest approximations, not decimals, and months with records from fewer than five people show "—". How it works.
