Bali Barat National Park
🇮🇩 Indonesia
Bali Barat National Park sits on the northwestern tip of Bali in Indonesia, protecting a dense expanse of tropical rainforest that stretches across rugged hills and coastal forest. Unlike the island’s heavily farmed interior, this protected habitat preserves a remote sanctuary of native trees, thick vines, and shaded woodland floors.

What visitors say
I also encountered the Rufous-backed Kingfisher after a long wait at a hide meant for the Javan Banded Pitta.
I joined a tour here, I went in thinking, “Cool, maybe I’ll see the Bali Starling if I’m lucky.” By the end, I’d counted over 40 species in a single morning.
We inadvertently disturb a monitor lizard from its sunbathing spot on a rock and can hear – in the far distance – the raucous call of monkeys… macaques, we think.
While the owlet was nowhere to be found, a few Mangrove Whistlers were heard, but they were reluctant to show, and I was the only one who managed a brief view.
