The pheasant-tailed jacana (Hydrophasianus chirurgus) is a jacana in the monotypic genus Hydrophasianus. Like all other jacanas, they have elongated toes and nails that enable them to walk on floating vegetation in shallow lakes, their preferred habitat. Rare
Under 5% of wildlife watchers report a Pheasant-tailed Jacana sighting in Kozhikode on a given day, based on 110 verified sightings from GBIF citizen-science data. It is the 104th most-seen of the 229 birds we can rate there. Over three days the chance rises to about 10%, and over a week to about 30%, if each day is a fresh chance.
November to January
In those months about 10% of wildlife watchers report a Pheasant-tailed Jacana in Kozhikode on a given day, against under 5% in February to October, the lowest months. Those are among Kozhikode's driest months, with about 55 mm of rain a month against 390 mm in June.

GBIF citizen-science records
It is estimated from how often the Pheasant-tailed Jacana is recorded against all the birds logged in Kozhikode (110 verified sightings), calibrated against known sighting rates. Figures are rounded to the nearest 10% because citizen-science data supports honest approximations, not decimals, and months with records from fewer than five people show "—". How it works.
