The white-collared manakin (Manacus candei) is a passerine bird in the manakin family. It is a resident breeder in the tropical New World from southeastern Mexico to Costa Rica and the extreme west of Panama. It typically inhabits thickets at the edges of moist forest, tall secondary growth and old cacao plantations. It is a small, plump bird about 11 centimetres (4.3 in) long. Males have a black crown, mid-back band, wings and tail, an olive-green rump and yellow belly. Females and juveniles are olive-green with yellow bellies and resemble female orange-collared manakins. At breeding time, males are involved in lekking behaviour on the forest floor during which they puff out their neck feathers. This is a fairly common species with a wide range, and the International Union for Conservation of Nature has rated its conservation status as being of "least concern".
The bird is named after Admiral Antoine Marie Ferdinand de Maussion de Candé, an explorer of South America. It occurs in the lowlands and foothills of the Caribbean slope up to 700 m, being replaced on the Pacific slopes of Costa Rica and Panama by the closely related orange-collared (M. aurantiacus... With luck
About 10% of wildlife watchers report a White-collared Manakin sighting in Calakmul Biosphere Reserve on a given day, based on 49 verified sightings from GBIF citizen-science data from 2019 to 2026. It is the 158th most-seen of the 271 birds we can rate there. Over three days the chance rises to about 20%, and over a week to about 40%, if each day is a fresh chance.
April
In that month about 20% of wildlife watchers report a White-collared Manakin in Calakmul Biosphere Reserve on a given day, against under 5% in February–March, May and August–November, the lowest months. That is one of Calakmul Biosphere Reserve's driest months, with about 25 mm of rain against 130 mm in June.
Between 11 am and 2 pm
Across all the parks we cover, that three-hour window holds the most White-collared Manakin sightings with a recorded time, and about 9 in 10 of them come between 6 am and 6 pm: it is a daytime animal.
16th of 19
Of the 19 parks where we can rate White-collared Manakin sightings, Calakmul Biosphere Reserve ranks 16th at about 10%. The best odds are in Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary (Belize, about 60%), Pico Bonito National Park (Honduras, about 50%) and Tenorio Volcano National Park (Costa Rica, about 40%). All parks ranked.
GBIF citizen-science records
It is estimated from how often the White-collared Manakin is recorded against all the birds logged in Calakmul Biosphere Reserve (49 verified sightings from 2019 to 2026), calibrated against known sighting rates. Figures are rounded to the nearest 10% because citizen-science data supports honest approximations, not decimals, and months with records from fewer than five people show "—". How it works.
