The blacksmith lapwing or blacksmith plover (Vanellus armatus) is a lapwing species that occurs commonly from Kenya through central Tanzania to southern and southwestern Africa. The vernacular name derives from the repeated metallic 'tink, tink, tink' alarm call, which suggests a blacksmith's hammer striking an anvil.
Blacksmith lapwings are very boldly patterned in black, grey and white, possibly warning colours to predators. It is one of five lapwing species (two African, one Asian and two Neotropical) that share the characteristics of red eyes and a bold pied plumage, with a carpal (wing) spur adorning the wrist joint; a sharp black protrusion which they use to aggressively defend their young from potential threats, through persistent aerial dives typically targeting the head. The portions of the bird's body bare to plumage average a black coloration for the bill, and either a black or white-grey dappling on the legs. Females average larger and heavier but the sexes are generally alike.
The blacksmith lapwing occurs in association with wetlands of all sizes. Even very small damp areas caused by a spilling water trough can attract them.... Wikipedia →

Possible
About 20% of wildlife watchers report a Blacksmith Lapwing sighting in Durban on a given day, based on 175 verified sightings from GBIF citizen-science data. It is the 46th most-seen of the 219 birds we can rate there. Over three days the chance rises to about 40%, and over a week to about 70%, if each day is a fresh chance.
June–July, September–October and December–February
In those months about 20% of wildlife watchers report a Blacksmith Lapwing in Durban on a given day, against about 10% in March–May, August and November, the lowest months.
Between 9 am and noon
Across all the parks we cover, that three-hour window holds the most Blacksmith Lapwing sightings with a recorded time, and about 9 in 10 of them come between 6 am and 6 pm: it is a daytime animal.
5th of 7
Of the 7 cities where we can rate Blacksmith Lapwing sightings, Durban ranks 5th at about 20%. The best odds are in Cape Town (South Africa, about 40%), Johannesburg (South Africa, about 30%) and Pretoria (South Africa, about 30%).
GBIF citizen-science records
It is estimated from how often the Blacksmith Lapwing is recorded against all the birds logged in Durban (175 verified sightings), calibrated against known sighting rates. Figures are rounded to the nearest 10% because citizen-science data supports honest approximations, not decimals, and months with records from fewer than five people show "—". How it works.
