The buff-necked ibis (Theristicus caudatus), also known as the white-throated ibis, is a fairly large ibis found widely in open habitats of eastern and northern South America. It formerly included the similar black-faced ibis as a subspecies, but that species is almost entirely restricted to colder parts of South America, has a buff (not dark grey) lower chest, and lacks the contrasting large white wing-patches.
The buff-necked ibis was described by the French polymath Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon in 1781 in his Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux based on a specimen collected in Cayenne, French Guiana. The bird was also illustrated in a hand-coloured plate engraved by François-Nicolas Martinet in the Planches Enluminées D'Histoire Naturelle which was produced under the supervision of Edme-Louis Daubenton to accompany Buffon's text. Neither the plate caption nor Buffon's description included a scientific name but in 1783 the Dutch naturalist Pieter Boddaert coined the binomial name Scolopax caudatus in his catalogue of the Planches Enluminées. The buff-necked ibis is now placed in the genus Theristicus that was erected by the German naturalist Johann Georg Wagler... Wikipedia →

Possible
About 30% of wildlife watchers report a Buff-necked Ibis sighting in Serra da Canastra National Park on a given day, based on 155 verified sightings from GBIF citizen-science data from 2019 to 2026. It is the 65th most-seen of the 294 birds we can rate there. Over three days the chance rises to about 60%, and over a week to about 90%, if each day is a fresh chance.
April and October
In those months about 40% of wildlife watchers report a Buff-necked Ibis in Serra da Canastra National Park on a given day, against about 10% in May, the lowest month.
Between 10 am and 1 pm
Across all the parks we cover, that three-hour window holds the most Buff-necked Ibis sightings with a recorded time, and about 9 in 10 of them come between 6 am and 6 pm: it is a daytime animal.
3rd of 14
Of the 14 parks where we can rate Buff-necked Ibis sightings, Serra da Canastra National Park ranks 3rd at about 30%. The best odds are in Emas National Park (Brazil, about 60%) and Parque Estadual Encontro das Águas (Brazil, about 30%). All parks ranked.
GBIF citizen-science records
It is estimated from how often the Buff-necked Ibis is recorded against all the birds logged in Serra da Canastra National Park (155 verified sightings from 2019 to 2026), calibrated against known sighting rates. Figures are rounded to the nearest 10% because citizen-science data supports honest approximations, not decimals, and months with records from fewer than five people show "—". How it works.
