The cinnamon hummingbird (Amazilia rutila) is a species of hummingbird (named for its brilliant brown gold color) in the tribe of the 'emeralds', Trochilini (subfamily Trochilinae). Currently, four regional subspecies are recognized.
Cinnamon hummingbirds are typically found at or just slightly above sea level, often inhabiting coastal and lowland areas, as well as further inland in warmer locations in the southern parts of their range. They are predominantly found along the Pacific western coast of México and south through Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica. They are also found in Belize and the southern Mexican states of Campeche, Quintana Roo and Yucatán.
The cinnamon hummingbird was formally described in 1842 by French naturalist René Lesson after a specimen he had collected near Acapulco, Guerrero, in southwestern Mexico. Lesson placed the new species in the genus Ornismya and coined the binomial name Ornismya cinnamomea. Unfortunately, the specific epithet was already in-use, as Paul Gervais had previously used O. cinnamomeus for a separate species of hummingbird described in 1835. Possible
About 30% of wildlife watchers report a Cinnamon Hummingbird sighting in Las Baulas Marine National Park on a given day, based on 387 verified sightings from GBIF citizen-science data from 2019 to 2026. It is the 23rd most-seen of the 206 birds we can rate there. Over three days the chance rises to about 70%, and over a week to about 90%, if each day is a fresh chance.
May
In that month about 60% of wildlife watchers report a Cinnamon Hummingbird in Las Baulas Marine National Park on a given day, against about 20% in February, August–September and November, the lowest months.
Between 7 and 10 am
Across all the parks we cover, that three-hour window holds the most Cinnamon Hummingbird sightings with a recorded time, and about 9 in 10 of them come between 6 am and 6 pm: it is a daytime animal.
4th of 24
Of the 24 parks where we can rate Cinnamon Hummingbird sightings, Las Baulas Marine National Park ranks 4th at about 30%. The best odds are in Masaya Volcano National Park (Nicaragua, about 60%), Celestún Biosphere Reserve (Mexico, about 50%) and Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve (Mexico, about 40%). All parks ranked.
GBIF citizen-science records
It is estimated from how often the Cinnamon Hummingbird is recorded against all the birds logged in Las Baulas Marine National Park (387 verified sightings from 2019 to 2026), calibrated against known sighting rates. Figures are rounded to the nearest 10% because citizen-science data supports honest approximations, not decimals, and months with records from fewer than five people show "—". How it works.
