The baya weaver (Ploceus philippinus) is a weaverbird found across the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. Flocks are found in grasslands, cultivated areas, scrub and secondary growth. They are known for their hanging retort shaped nests woven from leaves, usually found on thorny trees or palm fronds, near or hanging over water where predators cannot easily reach. They are widespread and common within their range and are prone to local, seasonal movements in response to rain and food availability.
Five subspecies are recognised. The population in southwest India is darker above and referred to as subspecies P. p. travancoreensis. In 1760, French zoologist Mathurin Jacques Brisson described the baya weaver in his Ornithologie based on a specimen he believed, incorrectly, to have been collected in Philippines. He used the French name Le gros-bec des Philippines and the Latin Coccothraustes Philippensis. Brisson's Latin names do not conform to the binomial system and are not recognised by the International Commission on Zoological... Wikipedia →

Under 5% of wildlife watchers report a Baya Weaver sighting in Bandipur National Park on a given day, based on 21 verified sightings from GBIF citizen-science data from 2019 to 2026. It is the 199th most-seen of the 256 birds we can rate there. Over three days the chance rises to about 10%, if each day is a fresh chance.
August and September
In those months about 10% of wildlife watchers report a Baya Weaver in Bandipur National Park on a given day, against under 5% in October to July, the lowest months. Those are among Bandipur National Park's wettest months, with about 170 mm of rain a month against almost none in February.

GBIF citizen-science records
It is estimated from how often the Baya Weaver is recorded against all the birds logged in Bandipur National Park (21 verified sightings from 2019 to 2026), calibrated against known sighting rates. Figures are rounded to the nearest 10% because citizen-science data supports honest approximations, not decimals, and months with records from fewer than five people show "—". How it works.
