The rusty-margined flycatcher (Myiozetetes cayanensis) is a species of bird in the family Tyrannidae, the tyrant flycatchers. It is found in Panama and every mainland South American country except Chile and Uruguay, though only as a vagrant to Argentina. It has also been recorded as a vagrant in Costa Rica.
In 1760 the French zoologist Mathurin Jacques Brisson included a description of the rusty-margined flycatcher in his Ornithologie based on a specimen collected in Cayenne in French Guiana. He used the French name Le gobe-mouche de Cayenne and the Latin Muscicapa Cayanensis. Although Brisson coined Latin names, these do not conform to the binomial system and are not recognized by the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature. When in 1766 the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus updated his Systema Naturae for the twelfth edition, he added the rusty-margined flycatcher among the 240 species that had been previously described by Brisson. Linnaeus included a brief description, used Brisson's Latin name as the binomial name Muscicapa cayanensis, and cited Brisson's work. This species is now placed in the genus Myiozetetes that was erected by the English zoologist... Wikipedia →

Rare
Under 5% of wildlife watchers report a Rusty-margined Flycatcher sighting in Rio de Janeiro on a given day, based on 6 verified sightings from GBIF citizen-science data. It is the 257th most-seen of the 278 birds we can rate there. Over three days the chance rises to under 5%, if each day is a fresh chance.
Any time of year
In every month with enough records, under 5% of wildlife watchers report a Rusty-margined Flycatcher in Rio de Janeiro on a given day, so our monthly data shows no clear season.
Between 3 and 6 pm
Across all the parks we cover, that three-hour window holds the most Rusty-margined Flycatcher sightings with a recorded time, and about 9 in 10 of them come between 6 am and 6 pm: it is a daytime animal.
16th of 17
Of the 17 cities where we can rate Rusty-margined Flycatcher sightings, Rio de Janeiro ranks 16th at under 5%. The best odds are in Cali (Colombia, about 60%), Medellín (Colombia, about 50%) and Belém (Brazil, about 40%).
GBIF citizen-science records
It is estimated from how often the Rusty-margined Flycatcher is recorded against all the birds logged in Rio de Janeiro (6 verified sightings), calibrated against known sighting rates. Figures are rounded to the nearest 10% because citizen-science data supports honest approximations, not decimals, and months with records from fewer than five people show "—". How it works.
