The Eurasian hobby (Falco subbuteo), or just hobby, is a small, slim falcon. It belongs to a group of similar falcons often considered a subgenus of Falco. The first formal description of the Eurasian hobby was by the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus in 1758 in the tenth edition of his Systema Naturae under the present binomial name Falco subbuteo. The genus name falco derives from Late Latin falx, falcis, a sickle, referring to the wing profile of the bird. The species name subbuteo is from Latin sub, "below, less than, under" and buteo, "buzzard". The species' English name comes from Old French hobé or hobet. It became the trademark for the Subbuteo games company after its creator, who was an ornithologist, was refused permission to register "Hobby".
Two subspecies are recognized: F. s. subbuteo: the nominate race is resident in Africa, Europe and Central and East Asia, winters in Central and South Africa and South Asia Adults are slate-grey above with a dark crown and two short... Wikipedia →

Under 5% of wildlife watchers report a Eurasian Hobby sighting in Belgrade on a given day, based on 31 verified sightings from GBIF citizen-science data. It is the 98th most-seen of the 144 birds we can rate there. Over three days the chance rises to under 5%, and over a week to about 10%, if each day is a fresh chance.
July and August
In those months about 10% of wildlife watchers report a Eurasian Hobby in Belgrade on a given day, against under 5% in September to June, the lowest months.
Between 10 am and 1 pm
Across all the parks we cover, that three-hour window holds the most Eurasian Hobby sightings with a recorded time, and nearly all of them come between 6 am and 6 pm: it is a daytime animal.
30th of 56
Of the 56 cities where we can rate Eurasian Hobby sightings, Belgrade ranks 30th at under 5%. The best odds are in Tashkent (Uzbekistan, about 20%), Yekaterinburg (Russia, about 10%) and Istanbul (Turkey, about 10%).
GBIF citizen-science records
It is estimated from how often the Eurasian Hobby is recorded against all the birds logged in Belgrade (31 verified sightings), calibrated against known sighting rates. Figures are rounded to the nearest 10% because citizen-science data supports honest approximations, not decimals, and months with records from fewer than five people show "—". How it works.
