The stripe-throated hermit (Phaethornis striigularis) is a species of hummingbird from Central America and north-western South America. It is generally fairly common and considered Least Concern by BirdLife International.
With a total length of 9–10 cm (3.5–3.9 in) and a weight of 2–3 g (0.071–0.106 oz), it is among the smaller species of hermits. The wing-coverts, mantle, nape and crown are dull iridescent green, the rump is pale rufous, the belly and flanks are buff, and the central underparts and throat are pale greyish brown, the latter with small dark streaks that often are faint and difficult to see. The face has a blackish "bandit-mask" border above by a whitish-buff supercilium and below by whitish-buff malar. The flight-feathers and tail are blackish; the latter tipped whitish to ochraceous depending on the subspecies involved. As in most other hermits, it has a long, decurved bill. The basal half of the lower mandible is yellow, but otherwise the entire bill is black.
The sexes are virtually identical. Juveniles apparently have the entire back pale rufous. The male has a song which is high-pitched, squeaky, monotonous and easily overheard... Wikipedia →

Rare
Under 5% of wildlife watchers report a Stripe-throated Hermit sighting in Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve on a given day, based on 204 verified sightings from GBIF citizen-science data from 2019 to 2026. It is the 195th most-seen of the 412 birds we can rate there. Over three days the chance rises to under 5%, and over a week to about 10%, if each day is a fresh chance.
Any time of year
In every month with enough records, under 5% of wildlife watchers report a Stripe-throated Hermit in Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve on a given day, so our monthly data shows no clear season.
Between 10 am and 1 pm
Across all the parks we cover, that three-hour window holds the most Stripe-throated Hermit sightings with a recorded time, and about 9 in 10 of them come between 6 am and 6 pm: it is a daytime animal.
34th of 41
Of the 41 parks where we can rate Stripe-throated Hermit sightings, Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve ranks 34th at under 5%. The best odds are in Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary (Belize, about 40%), Pico Bonito National Park (Honduras, about 40%) and Bastimentos Island National Marine Park (Panama, about 30%). All parks ranked.
GBIF citizen-science records
It is estimated from how often the Stripe-throated Hermit is recorded against all the birds logged in Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve (204 verified sightings from 2019 to 2026), calibrated against known sighting rates. Figures are rounded to the nearest 10% because citizen-science data supports honest approximations, not decimals, and months with records from fewer than five people show "—". How it works.
