The glossy ibis was first documented in the New World in 1817 (New Jersey). Audubon saw the species just once in Florida in 1832. It expanded its range substantially northwards in the 1940s and to the west in the 1980s. This species is migratory; most European birds winter in Africa, and in North America... Wikipedia →

Rare
Under 5% of wildlife watchers report a Glossy Ibis sighting in Panama City on a given day, based on 33 verified sightings from GBIF citizen-science data. It is the 250th most-seen of the 363 birds we can rate there. Over three days the chance rises to under 5%, if each day is a fresh chance.
Any time of year
In every month with enough records, under 5% of wildlife watchers report a Glossy Ibis in Panama City on a given day, so our monthly data shows no clear season.
Between 8 and 11 am
Across all the parks we cover, that three-hour window holds the most Glossy Ibis sightings with a recorded time, and about 8 in 10 of them come between 6 am and 6 pm: it is a daytime animal.

Of the 88 cities where we can rate Glossy Ibis sightings, Panama City ranks 77th at under 5%. The best odds are in Luxor (Egypt, about 60%), Cairo (Egypt, about 50%) and Madurai (India, about 50%).
GBIF citizen-science records
It is estimated from how often the Glossy Ibis is recorded against all the birds logged in Panama City (33 verified sightings), calibrated against known sighting rates. Figures are rounded to the nearest 10% because citizen-science data supports honest approximations, not decimals, and months with records from fewer than five people show "—". How it works.
